A combination of oats, freeze dried fruit, and dried fruit, this Berry Muesli makes the perfect base for a bowl of overnight oats, but better.

What are the ingredients of muesli?
Traditionally muesli is a combination of rolled oats, potentially another grain like wheat bran, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. This version is a bit simpler and only uses rolled oats, dried fruit, and freeze dried berries. It would also be delicious with chia seeds or flax added in!
What type of oats are used for muesli?
Traditionally whole rolled oats are used for muesli. However I find that using quick cooking rolled oats gives the overnight muesli a thicker creamier texture. You can also give the whole rolled oats a quick blitz in the blender to create a similar texture.
What is the difference between muesli and granola?
Usually granola is made by tossing oats, nuts, and seeds in a combination of a sweetener such as honey or maple syrup and a fat like coconut oil or olive oil and then baked until crunchy. On the other hand muesli is essentially all of the parts of granola without the coating and without being baked.
Tips for Berry Muesli
- This is one of those recipes that almost doesn’t need a recipe which means it doesn’t really need tips but here are the basics.
- For the best overnight muesli texture, use quick cooking rolled oats or give your whole rolled oats a quick blitz in the blender or food processor. This helps break them up and gives a thicker creamier texture.
- Using a combination of dried fruit and freeze dried fruit in the muesli brightens the flavor and creates a good variety of textures.
- You can 100% make this recipe your own by adding nuts and seeds but I like to keep this one light and full of berries. If you choose to add nuts I recommend giving them a quick toast in the pan over low heat to enhance their flavor.
- If you struggle to digest raw oats and don’t want to turn the muesli into an overnight muesli, you can toast the oats at 350 F in the oven until just barely starting to darken. Then let them cool and mix with the other ingredients.

Ingredients
Muesli
- Oats: Either whole rolled oats or quick cooking rolled oats should be used for this muesli. If you plan to make them into overnight oats I especially recommend using the quick cooking variety or briefly blending the whole oats in a blender or food processor just to help break them down a little.
- Dried Blueberries or Currants: I think the size and flavor of dried blueberries or currants are perfect in this muesli but you can use any dried fruit you want! If you add something like dried apricots or cherries I recommend cutting them a bit smaller first with kitchen scissors.
- Freeze dried berries: The berry mix from trader joes which has blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries is my favorite. But you can also buy them individually or just do two of them or only one!
Overnight Muesli
- Yogurt: To turn the muesli into an overnight muesli you’ll want to add yogurt to get a nice thick creamy texture. Any yogurt will work but I recommend fage greek yogurt. The acidity of it gets toned down with the addition of milk and all of the fruit!
- Milk: Any milk will work, even plant based milk!
- Frozen berries: Fresh or frozen berries will work! I love using frozen because they are less expensive, great quality, and defrost in the fridge overnight!

How to make Berry Muesli
Dry Muesli Mix
- In a large airtight container mix together the oats, dried berries, and the freeze dried fruit. I like to crush the freeze dried berries slightly so they distribute a bit better in the oats.
To make overnight muesli
- Add 40 grams of the berry muesli, 120 grams of milk, and 170 grams of yogurt to a bowl and stir to combine.
- Then add in 40 grams of frozen raspberries and 40 grams of frozen blueberries and stir again.
- Place in the fridge overnight. If you make more than one serving or plan to leave it in the fridge for more than one night, cover the bowl with a lid or a layer of plastic.
- In the morning serve with more fresh fruit on top or as is!
